“You drank the milk, didn’t you?” he asked.

Brandi’s dull mind worked pathetically to think of a response. Propelling her mind forward or backward in time, or even using it for anything not related to the present moment, was like pulling a stubborn mule.

“If ya’ll don’t have any plans, why don’t you come with me down to The Doghouse? There’s a hoedown tonight, and I reckon you’ll be drinkin’ for free.”

Brandi had no idea that The Doghouse was the town’s only bar, and a rough one at that. Her inclination, as always, was simply to say “yes” to any man with his hands on her.
